Money: Merits and Demerit

Money plays an important role in our life. It is very necessary for everyone. Before the invention of money, people used to exchange things they owned for things they needed. Nowadays, we can’t imagine the world without checks, banknotes or coins. In one way, money has become a good servant for it helps to obtain and measure the value of things and services, but in another way it has become a bad master when it controls man.

On the one hand, money is necessary for us to get everything we need. Without it, we can’t get food, clothes or residence. It is necessary for those who go to school to have education, for those who need to be cured and for those who travel from place to place. The governments need a lot of money to develop their countries and citizens. Without money, no factories, streets, bridges or institutions are built.

On the other hand, money will be a great evil if it is misused or when it becomes an end itself. Some people may rob or kill to be wealthy, while others indulge in the luxuries of the world neglecting morality. Even wars may break out here and there when advanced countries seek the wealth of less advanced countries.

To sum up, money is a weapon with two edges. It can be a blessing as long as it is used to serve man, but when it becomes his master and obsession it will lead him to destruction. Anyhow, money should not become an end itself, but a means to an end.
